SINGAPORE – 01 November 2010: The winners of the International FLOW (Flowriding League of the World) Championships were announced on Sunday at Wave House Sentosa after an intense and exciting weekend. The three-day competition featured some of the world’s top flowriders, with more than 2000 spectators being treated to an exciting time as flowriders engaged in a head-to-head battle for the Championship title.
Organised by Contiki Holidays, the worldwide leader in holidays designed specifically for 18 to 35 year-olds, and Wave House Sentosa from Friday 29 October to Sunday 31 October, the competition brought together some of the best flow-riders from Wave House Sentosa (Singapore), San Diego (United States), Durban (South Africa), Santiago (Chile) and United Arab Emirates.
Singapore’s own Ili Lim, 21, stole the limelight and came in first for FlowRider - Expert Ladies, FlowBarrel Strapless - Expert Ladies, and Overall Champion for Expert Ladies. The Overall Men’s Bodyboard Champion went to Nick Nguyen from USA, the Overall Expert Men’s Champion went to Eric Silverman from USA, and the Overall Team Champion title was awarded to Team USA.
Nicholas Lim, Regional Director of Contiki Holidays, said “Getting out there, letting your hair down and having a good time has always been our mantra and this event clearly amplifies the traits of the brand.
Through the International FLOW Championships, we hope this will help to increase awareness of the sport in Singapore and regionally, while bringing both surfers and spectators together for an exciting and fun-filled experience.”
The International FLOW Championships also provided an international platform for locals Alfian Affandi, 27, and Arthur Kor, 28, on Men’s FlowBoard, Ili Lim, 21, on Women’s FlowBoard and Leanna Crowley, 17, on the Expert Bodyboard to represent Team Singapore. Considered the youngest team of the lot, they were competing with the likes of top riders Greg Lazarus and Eric Silverman from the United States, and Matt Lammers and Wes Fischer from South Africa to name a few.
Terry Goh, General Manager of Wave House Sentosa added, “A platform like this championship will raise the standard of flowriding in Singapore on a truly international platform. It has definitely been our pleasure to play host to these spectacular athletes as well as our partners and we are already expecting a bigger event in 2011!”
Flowriding involves riding on either a stand-up Flowboard or Bodyboard on the FlowRider and FlowBarrel – an artificial wave-producing machine that shoots out water at speeds of 32km/h to 48km/h over padded surfaces that mimic the shapes of waves. As such, it produces a stationary wave known as a sheet wave.
Judging is based on a point-award system and flowriders have to exhibit mastery of both the FlowRider ® and FlowBarrel ® waves. They are given points based on the difficulty, variety and execution of each move or trick and this will go into the overall scoring in the individual and team category.
The winners of the competition stand to win S$15,000 worth of prizes and products.
The event also saw a series of non-stop action and partying in conjunction with the International Flow Championships with performances by top DJs and bands, and a night of fun partying with 91.3FM’s “Must Drink Friday” and the electrifying B-boying moves at the “Raw 2: Floor Bboying Championships” on Saturday.
Nicholas Lim added, “From high adrenaline flow riding tricks from world renowned flowriders during the day to high pumping parties at dusk, the International Flow Competition is a reflection of any Contiki 18-35 holiday experience. “
